Founder and Director of School of Democratic Economics

Biography

Hendro Sangkoyo is a principal researcher at the School of Democratic Economics (SDE), a learning network he co-founded in 2007. The overarching learning theme that SDE is concerned with is the underlying logics of the deepening social-ecological crisis and the imperatives for its reversal. He has been collaborating extensively with rural and urban communities in the Indonesian archipelago, as well as with scholar-activist individuals and networks in Southeast Asia, the Americas and Europe. He has taught at the Indonesian Institute of Technology and served as a visiting scholar/lecturer at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology School of Social Science and Planning and the University of Melbourne. Over the past six years he has been engaged in an ongoing collaborative research on Bali—amongst other projects and campaigns, a part of SDE’s research agenda on the issue of path dependence and the chronospatial complexity of crisis on the island/inter-island scales across the Indonesian archipelago
